Pride battle in a 20-6 loss against Benedictine
DUBUQUE, Iowa – Looking to win their first conference game of the season, the Clarke University women's lacrosse team went up against the defending champion Benedictine Ravens and were unable to overcome an 11 goal first quarter on their way to a 20-6 loss.
After trailing 11-1 through the first 15 minutes, the Pride played well the rest of the way as they would lose the final three quarters by a score of 9-5.
Scoring the first two goals of the game for Clarke was junior midfielder Emily Moran who would finish the game with three total. Those three goals propelled Moran into a tie for the team lead with 18 goals on the season with senior Alyssa Humphrey. Humphrey would have a goal herself and an assist on five shot attempts. Finishing the game with two goals was fellow senior Jocelyn Lawrence, who sits comfortably in second on the team with 11 goals.
Starting in net for the first time was Milwaukee native Jaylah Rayford who played the first half and compiled seven saves, while facing 22 shots. Playing in the second half and seeing game action in net for the second time this season was freshman Angel Jenkins. Jenkins made one save and faced six shots.
The starting goalie for the Ravens was Gianna Stalletti who improves to 5-3 overall after playing the first half and making five saves on eight shots. Playing in the second half was Molly Owen who made two saves, while seeing five shots.
Having nine different goal scorers, Benedictine were led by Courtney Frankfurth's five goals and one assist. Margaux Gelbach scored four times and Kaylen Moore netted three. Grace Simonsen set up four goals and finished with two herself.
Seemingly being the more aggressive team, the Ravens finished the game with almost double the shot attempts at 34-18 and winning more of the faceoffs as it was 21-9 in favor of the road team. They did however commit more fouls as they had a 16-11 edge over the home Pride.
Up next for the Pride women's lacrosse team is another home game, this time against the College of St. Benedict on Tuesday, April 4th with the faceoff at 7 pm.
