Hinton and Quesada sweep Baseball weekly awards in the midst strong team play
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - During their current nine-game winning streak, two Clarke University baseball players earned weekly honors from the Heart of America Athletic Conference as Devan Quesada takes home Pitcher of the Week recognition and Bryce Hinton earns Player of the Week honors.
Quesada earned a pair of wins in his two starts over the last week with a six-inning performance against No. 23 Arizona Christian University last Monday and a five-inning performance on Sunday at Baker University. Against the Firestorm, Quesada didn't allow a hit over his six innings as he gave up an earned run while striking out eight on the Pride's way to a 10-1 win out in Arizona. In yesterday's game, Quesada gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out seven as CU was able to pull of an 11-5 victory over the Wildcats.
Quesada now moves to 5-1 on the season over 33.1 innings pitched with a 3.24 ERA and 36 strikeouts for a 9.72 K/9 average as he leads the team in innings, wins, and has the lowest ERA for anyone with more than 15 innings pitched. This is the first Pitcher of the Week honor for Quesada since joining the team this season and he is the second member of the Pride to earn the honor after Isaac Rohde received Pitcher of the Week back on Feb. 28.
Hinton came through at the plate for CU both in quantity and quality of results as he had a hit in all four of the team's games over the last week including multi-hit performances in the last two games against Baker on Sunday. The quality came in yesterday's opener against the Wildcats as he stepped to the plate in the ninth inning with the score tied 6-6, he sent a ball over the wall for a solo home run to break the tie as Clarke would go on to win the game 7-6.
Currently on a seven-game hitting streak, Hinton is now batting .333 on the season with 23 hits in 69 at bats while slugging .522 with four doubles and three home runs. This is the first Player of the Week honor for Hinton in his career as he's in his third season on the Pride roster.
Clarke baseball is currently playing in the finale doubleheader for their series at Baker as they will finish up in Baldwin City, Kan. then return to Dubuque for their first home games of the season against Graceland University on Mar. 19-20.
