Watters earns Pride women's volleyball's first weekly honor since 2021

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - On the final day of September, the Clarke University women's volleyball team received an honor they have not been able to capture in about two and a half seasons as sophomore outside hitter Maya Watters was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference Attacker of the Week Presented by Molten on Monday.

The Dubuque, Iowa natvie finished off a week where she was the match leader in kills in all three of the Pride's contest that included a five set win on the road at Graceland and a pair of losses against Culver-Stockton at home and on the road at Peru State.

Against the Yellowjackets, Watters neared record breaking status as she finished with a career-high 24 kills on 50 attempts with a .360 hitting percentage as those 24 kills were just three shy of the school record for kills in a match and tied the second-most kills in any match and in a five-set match in Clarke women's volleyball history.

Watters had an overall effiecient week finishing the three matches with 52 total kills, 12 against the Wildcats and 16 against the Bobcats, and just 15 errors on 112 total attempts for a .330 hitting percentage and over four kills per set in the 12 total sets.

After missing the first two matches of the season, Watters has shined for CU, leading the team in kills with 192, already 90 more than her total from last season in four less matches played, while hitting for a .281 percentage, boosting that number up over 200 points from 2023 with a higher workload.

The Dubuque Senior High School product becomes the first member of the Pride women's volleyball team to earn a Heart weekly honor, let alone an Attack of the Week, since fellow Dubuque native Amber Cooksley earned Attacker of the Week on Nov. 8, 2021.

Watters and the Pride will host another home match on Tuesday, Oct. 1 when they welcome Mount Mercy University to the Kehl Center for a 7:00 p.m. CT first serve against the Mustangs.
