Cruz notches third Player of the Week honor after clutch Heart Tournament performance
KANSAS CITY, Mo - Earning their first Heart of American Athletic Conference Tournament win in program history on Saturday, the Clarke University women's soccer team has yet another weekly honor as Genevieve Cruz was selected as the Heart Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Cruz recorded three points, finding her name on the scoresheet on both the CU's goals in their penalty shootout victory over Benedictine College by netting the game's opening goal in the third minute then assisting on Samantha Rodriguez's game-tying goal to make it 2-2 in the 75th minute.
In the penalty shootout, Cruz stepped to the penalty spot first for the Pride, burying her attempt as Clarke would end up winning the shootout by a score of 4-3 to move on in the tournament.
With her performance on Saturday, Cruz's season totals move to a team-high 15 goals and seven asssits for a total of 37 points through the 19 games so far.
Clarke women's soccer will continue the Heart Tournament on Tuesday on the road against No. 1 seed Central Methodist University for a 5:00 p.m. CT kickoff in Fayette, Mo. for the semifinal matchup.
