Moran's five goals not enough in 10-9 overtime loss to Culver-Stockton

DUBUQUE, Iowa – In a tightly contested game throughout that needed two overtime periods to finish, the Clarke University women's lacrosse team were defeated by Culver-Stockton 10-9 Wednesday evening.

After the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead with 8:22 remaining in the first quarter, Alyssa Humphrey and Emily Moran would score consecutively just over a minute apart from each other to even the score. Moran would take advantage of a pair of free-position shots and helped give the Pride a 4-2 lead after one quarter.

To begin the second quarter, Culver-Stockton would score three unanswered goals in about a three-minute span to take the 5-4 lead. Moran would tie it on her fourth goal of the game, but a free-position goal from Sopheea Vomund gave CSU a 6-5 halftime lead.

Despite being outshot 8-2 in the third quarter, Clarke would go into the fourth only down a goal as Humphrey found the back of the net early to tie it and Vomund would score once again.

The fourth looked a little different as the shot advantage would flip in favor of the Pride as they would outshoot the Wildcats 8-3, which would lead to three goals being scored opposed to two being scored by CSU. Melanie Sanchez would score her third goal of the game with 12:50 left in regulation to give CSU an 8-6 lead.

The Pride's leading scorer, Humphrey scored her 27th and 28th goal within seconds of each other to battle back to even with just over six minutes left. The final minute of the game would get a little chaotic with fouls and looking for that put away opportunity.

That opportunity could have come with 13 seconds left when Vomund scored her third goal of the game to take a 9-8 lead, but the ensuing draw would be taken by Humphrey and she would find Moran who was taken down near the crease, setting up a free-position shot with three seconds left.

The attempt would be successful for Moran's fifth goal of the game and her 26th on the year. Unfortunately, less than a minute into the second overtime, McKayla Nevaraz would score off the good pass from Vomund to down the Pride 10-9.

Getting her third start of the year, Jaylah Rayford played the full game in net and made a career high 13 saves, while facing 23 shots.

The Pride will wrap up their regular season on Saturday, April 15th when they'll hit the road to play Missouri Valley College with the opening faceoff set for 2:00 pm CST.
