First quarter struggles seal Pride's fate in a 19-5 defeat to Bennies
DUBUQUE, Iowa – Hosting the up and coming Saint Benedict Bennies in search of their third win on the season, the Clarke University women's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a 13-0 run between the first and second quarter in a 19-5 loss Tuesday evening.
Jumping out to a quick start, the Pride scored first only 42 seconds in after the Pride took possession off the opening draw control and Alyssa Humphrey was able to go around multiple defenders to beat the goalkeeper. Just over two minutes later, the Pride took a 2-0 lead and looked to be off to the races when Jocelyn Lawrence scored her 12th goal on the season from Laney Thumser.
Emma Schrepfer would cut the lead in half at the 11:39 mark in the first quarter, which opened the floodgates to a 13-0 run where eight different Bennies would earn a goal that would last until an Emily Moran unassisted goal with 8:50 left in the second quarter. Humphrey would score two more times on the day for Clarke giving her three for the game on seven shots and seven ground balls.
Leading offensively for the Bennies, Grace Fitzgibbons and Ella Steinke each scored four times. Emma Osland, Sami Hackley, Annika Anderson, and Emma Schrepfer each found the net twice.
Chloe Lewis played all 60 minutes for Saint Benedict making nine saves on 14 shots faced. The Pride had a pair of goalies play as Angel Jenkins got the start and was the goalie of record going 15 minutes making three saves on 13 shots faced. Coming in to relieve Jenkins and making her second appearance in a row was Jaylah Rayford who played the final three quarters making eight saves on 17 shots.
Although the Pride held the Bennies to 3-8 on free position shots, they weren't able to capitalize on any of their five attempts. The Bennies seemed to win almost all of their The Bennies had a 32-15 advantage in ground balls and a slight 16-12 advantage in faceoffs.
Up next, the Pride will travel to Oskaloosa to face William Penn on Saturday, April 8th beginning at 12 pm CST.
