Pride double win total from one year ago, defeat Wartburg 13-7
DUBUQUE, Iowa – Doubling their win total from last season after just two games, the Clarke University women's lacrosse team were able to defeat Wartburg College 13-7 Friday evening at Burrows Field.
Able to put up 13 goals with four different goal scorers, the Pride were led by senior midfielder Alyssa Humphrey who finished with five goals on 10 shots. Jazlynn Adams and Jocelyn Lawrence each scored three times followed by Emily Moran's two goals.
The freshman from San Diego, Calif. Katarina Saenz-Dubravcak made her second straight start for the Pride making 13 saves while seeing 20 shots.
The Pride would score first and keep the Knights at a comfortable distance throughout as they would lead by five goals at the end of half and third quarter even though they would each score four times in the third.
Scoring twice in the first quarter, Humphrey had Clarke up 2-0 scoring at the 7:44 mark and at 4:38. Lawrence would make it 3-0 with 1:22 left to play in the first. Wartburg finally got on the board 10 seconds later after Lindsay Langford netted a pass from Britta Solheim.
Scoring the next four goals, the Pride would go up 7-1 after an Adams free shot with 5:06 left in the second. The Knights would stop the run with a minute to play until half when Solheim setup Langford again to make it 7-2.
Eight goals were scored in an 11 minute time period in the third quarter as the once 11-3 lead for the Pride would be cut down to 11-6 in the final three minutes after Solheim scored for herself on a free shot attempt at 2:54. Langford scored her third goal of the game at 1:46 to play in the third off the pass from Beka Gershenoff followed up by Gershenoff scoring herself with 33 seconds left.
The fourth quarter was a possession battle as CU was trying to chew clock and prevent chances for Wartburg, but Humphrey and Lawrence were able to push the lead to six, making the final score 13-7.
Leading the way for the Knights was Langford's three goals and Solheim's two, while adding a pair of assists. Alyson Hasner made nine saves in goal while seeing 22 shots.
Pride women's lacrosse will begin conference play on Sunday, March 26th in Davenport, Iowa where they will take on St. Ambrose starting at 3 pm CST.
