Hot Start Not Enough As Culver-Stockton Defeats Pride, 20-13
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Clarke (0-2, 0-1 Heart) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but it wasn't enough in a 20-13 loss to Culver-Stockton College on Sunday at Burrows Field.
The Pride scored the game's first three goals when Madison Frey scored unassisted at 14:00, followed Jocelyn Lawrence's tally on an Alyssa Humphrey assist (13:52) and Emily Moran scoring unassisted (11:12).
The Wildcats (2-2, 1-1) answered with four-straight unassisted goals from McKayla Nevarez (9:52 & 9:15), Sopheea Vomund (8:02) and E'rmoni Redden (7:16), but Clarke came right back with back-to-back unassisted goals by Humphrey (6:55) and Frey (4:55) to reestablish a one-point advantage at 5-4.
Culver-Stockton jumped back in front of the Pride after Nevarez went on a personal 2-0 scoring run coupled with goal by Monsalve off of an assist from Vomund to put the Wildcats up 7-5. Goals by Humphrey (0:56) and Moran (0:17) evened things up at the end of the first.
The second quarter was dominated by the Wildcats, who regained the lead after goals by Vomund (13:14) and Redden (5:57 & 1:16).
The Pride kicked off the third quarter with back-to-back unassisted goals from Lindsey Wanaski (14:31) and Moran (11:12) to trim the deficit to 10-9, but two more goals from Neverez put Culver-Stockton back up three at a score of 12-9.
Frey (6:04) and Humphrey (5:34) responded with two goals to bring the game once again within one point (12-11), but the Wildcats finished the quarter with goals from Vomund (3:19) and Monsalve (0:34) to go up by three.
The fourth quarter was all Culver-Stockton, which scored the first four goals of the period to lead it 18-11 with 9:57 remaining. Herzog trimmed the deficit to six after scoring unassisted at the 8:46 mark, but the Wildcats responded with goals from Bodine (8:09) and Julieta Hernandez (7:03) to go up eight. Moran scored the final goal of the day for Clarke when she found the back of the net unassisted with 5:16 to play.
Six different Wildcats scored with Nevarez's leading the program. Redden was second on the team with five goals, while Vomund had four. Rounding out the scoring was Monsalve with two and Hernandez and Bodine scored one apiece.
The Pride will return to action on Tuesday to play a non-conference match against Wartburg College at 2 p.m. The Knights (0-5) are coming off of a 12-10 loss to Augustana College on Saturday.
