CANTON, Mo. - On their final day of the 2024 regular season, the Clarke University softball team dropped a pair of games that didn't finish in seven innings in a 9-6 eighth inning loss and an 11-3 run rule loss in five innings against Culver-Stockton College on Saturday afternoon.
Following a pair of solo home runs off of CU starting pitcher Meredith Gatto, the Wildcats would lose their 2-0 lead on a Kynadee Harris two-RBI double in the top of the fourth then Teal Transburg and Hannah Palzkill would drive in runs later in the inning to give the Pride a 4-2 lead.
Alicia Casas would be hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to grow the Clarke lead and CSC would pull within one in the fifth before a wild pitch in the top of the seventh would make it 6-4 with three outs to get for their 22nd victory of the season.
Unfortunately for the Pride, a pair of doubles with no runners on, one to start the bottom of the seventh and another with two outs, would lead to a pair of runs being scored by the Wildcats, tying the game at 6-6 and sending the game into extra innings.
After going three-up, three-down in the top of the eighth, Clarke would look to extend the game to the ninth but another two-out rally from Culver-Stockton would be capped off by a walkoff three-run home run by Kataleena Hunt to win the game.
The day's finale would start off strong for CU following a Daija Bates solo home run as Harris would add another RBI to score Kaylie Holtam on a single to make it 2-0 quickly for the Pride.
Culver-Stockton would score four of the next five runs and 11 of the final 12 runs with two each in the first and second, one in the third and a six-spot in the fourth to pull away by the eight-run lead that would force the run rule victory for the Wildcats.
This closes out the 2024 season for Clarke softball with a 21-23 overall record, finishing 7-17 in the Heart, as the first 20-win season for the Pride since head coach Garland Shirley took over the head coach role in 2019.
