Pride drop 1-0 heartbreaker to Northwestern College in overtime

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Clarke University men's soccer team played nearly 98 minutes of a defensive struggle on the pitch Friday night as Northwestern College came out on top 1-0 in overtime.

Juan Mackrey for the raiders scored the game winner in the 98th minute, just one second shy of the 99th minute, as he finished off a feed from Riley Aarbo to score the golden goal.

To get to overtime, the Pride had to fight against a significant advantage in shots as the game finished with a 17-5 margin in favor of NWC. Shots on goal was a closer margin with only six of the shots from the Raiders making their way on frame compared to three for CU.

Fernando Contreras got the nod in net for head coach Mike Paye and the Pride as he made three saves with two other saves coming from Clarke defenders.

Clarke had to play down a man for the final 35 minutes of regulation and all of overtime after Jake Persenico received a straight red card in the 56th minute, forcing an 11-10 player advantage for the Raiders.

The Pride will say in the western Iowa area for a Saturday evening matchup with Dordt University at 6:00 p.m. CT in Sioux Center, Iowa.
