DUBUQUE, Iowa - Opening a rare two-match weekend with a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup, the Clarke University men's lacrosse team fell 29-1 to No. 5 William Penn University on Saturday afternoon.
Unable to slow down one of the best teams in the NAIA, the Statesmen opened with a barrage of 10 goals in the first quarter before an six-goal second would push the halftime lead to 16-0 as possession was dominant on the side of WPU, outshooting the Pride 41-7 over the opening 30 minutes to finish the game with a 76-14 shot advantage.
CU's lone goal would come in the third quarter when Justyse White got the Pride on the board with just under four minutes remaining but the game was well out of reach by then.
William Penn finished with 11 different goal scorers, eight of which had a multi-goal game led by the seven-goal effort from Kenny Bohney as Breck Putzier was right behind with five goals and three assists for an eight-point game, one behind the game's point leader, Nate Blasingame who finished with two goals and seven assists.
Clarke men's lacrosse will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they host University of Saint Mary for a 4:00 p.m. CT opening faceoff following Senior Day ceremonies at Burrows Field.
