Pride and Pirates split series opening doubleheader

PARKVILLE, Mo. - Needing to move the originally schedule home series to their opponent's location due to weather constraints, the Clarke University baseball team split the first two games of their four-game series against Park University on Thursday afternoon with a 11-3 win in the opener and an 8-0 loss in game two.

After falling behind 1-0 in game one, the Pride would score three runs in the third, four runs in the second, and create more cushion from a 5-3 lead to the 11-3 final with an emphatic six-run sixth inning to seal the deal for the fifth win for Dante Maietta, who threw his second-straight complete game and third in his last five starts to move to 5-0 in seven starts this season.

Maietta's final line finished at seven innings of five-hit ball with only one of his three runs allowed being earned while he struck out five Pirate hitters and only walked one.

The offensive star for CU was outfielder Brendan O'Connor who went 3-for-4 with four RBIs including a two-run home run in the three-run third inning as he also added a two-RBI single in the sixth while Dean Ormonde had the only other multi-hit game and Alex Reynozo had the only other multi-RBI performance for Clarke in a game where all but one member of the starting lineup got a hit and everyone reached base at least once.

Clarke's offense quieted in the day's second game, only finishing with three hits against PU starter Guillermo Gelpi who finished with six strikeouts and only allowed one extra baserunner on a hit batter, allowing no walks in the game.

Park got their scoring started in the top of the third with a four-run inning oppened up on a two-run single from Gilberto Torres as he would finish the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored as the top of the order did a lot of the damage against the Pride pitching staff with Alex Rodriguez going 2-for-5 out of the leadoff spot and Billy Rivera finishing 4-for-4 with three runs scored in the two-hole.

These two teams will wrap up play of their four-game series on Friday as the finale doubleheader is scheduled to get started at 1:00 p.m. CT in Parkville.
